New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
