The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
