A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
